PRESS RELEASE: 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program

50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program Available to Flint Residents

Flint, Michigan – July 21, 2015 – The Street Maintenance division of the City of Flint’s Department of Public Works is unveiling its 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement program to Flint residents. Under the program, eligible property owners can sign up with the City to have damaged concrete sidewalks repaired by qualified contractors with the City sharing 50% of the cost of the work with property owners. The City’s goal is to repair approximately 1500 sidewalk squares this construction year with more in the following year as the program continues.

All residential property owners are eligible to participate in the program, however custom sidewalks (i.e. granite, colored, custom designs, etc.) are not eligible for repair. The scope of work will include replacing the main sidewalks in front of residential properties, as well as the courtesy walk (the smaller walkway that runs perpendicular to the main walk, from the main walk to the curb). The scope of work does not include replacing the driveway approach, however sidewalks through the driveway will be included.

Proposals from Flint-licensed sidewalk contractors interested in providing sidewalk replacement services for the 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program are being invited by the City at this time. Contractors must obtain a sidewalk permit to authorize replacement work to be performed at each location/home address and must agree to schedule all sidewalk repair work at individual locations by contacting the property owner to set up a date and time to remove and replace the new concrete sidewalks. All repairs are expected to be completed within 14 days after notice to proceed is issued. All completed repairs must be inspected and approved by City staff prior to the City releasing payment for services rendered.

Interested residents must complete the 50/50 Sidewalk Replacement Program application either by picking up the application at the City of Flint, Street Maintenance Division, 702 Twelfth St. or completing the application on the City’s website. Once the property owner is approved for participation, the property owner must submit 50% of the estimated sidewalk replacement cost to the City of Flint-Treasurer, 1101 S. Saginaw St., Flint, MI, 48502, via cash, check or money order.

Signup for the program as well as detailed information on the program including Frequently Asked Questions can be found on the City of Flint’s website cityofflint.com under the Residents tab. Work will take place in the City of Flint during the construction season from now until October 31, 2015 and will resume in the 2016 construction year from April 15 to June 30.
